Selecting independent reading can be difficult as many books on music artists tend to be purely promotional; therefore, be careful not to select these texts. They'll probably have more pictures than writing. What you should be looking for is a memoir, biography or autobiography.

These can be written by the artist or someone who is a huge fan. It is also better if the biography has been supported by the the artist, as this might indicate its accuracy. If you have difficulty finding a biography on a new artist, then find out who influenced your favorite artist and find something on them.

Throughout this unit you will be asked to read regularly, however, you will be asked to read texts that relate specifically to music and lyric writing.

These tend to biographies, autobiographies, memoirs and sometimes instructional books. The point of the reading is not to believe in artist hype but to examine the creative process of the artist. For example, how they wrote their songs and what influences them.

This does not solely mean the lyrics, but also the music. Some questions to consider while reading are: How important are lyrics and melody and which came first for their most popular songs?

Who influenced their early development and how? What was the source of their inspiration for their most important songs, and how did they initially capture it?

How does the artist represent their genre?
